It really feels a lot like how the Victory Games James Bond 007 game felt, in terms of scope, without the complexity of the bidding system and (to me) odd resolution system.Peter Dhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14246000382321978462noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7817710432110712270.post-68023013431648201542013-11-11T20:33:56.607-05:002013-11-11T20:33:56.607-05:00It's not written in stone that the PCs eventua...It's not written in stone that the PCs eventually win, but given sufficiently skilled heroes, they could if they do the right things. It's more of a heroic tone than assured heroic results, if you follow me.Peter Dhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14246000382321978462noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7817710432110712270.post-5302322068655058392013-11-11T20:32:19.643-05:002013-11-11T20:32:19.643-05:00I'm not surprised it works that way. Action 2 ...I'm not surprised it works that way. Action 2 looks like it would get a "gritty movie action" tone game right without any mods, and get progressively more heroic and cinematic tone the more access you provided to Destiny Points and whatnot. It's nice to hear how it works in play.

As for Action 3 - it's a toolkit for a very specific type of action game. I'm not surprised you'd rank it after Pyramid 3/53 for that reason. It's kind of the "No, when I meant Action I meant Chuck Norris movies" supplement rather than a generic expansion for all Action games.Peter Dhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14246000382321978462noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7817710432110712270.post-29101668374715088372013-11-11T12:38:57.585-05:002013-11-11T12:38:57.585-05:00Indeed, while my players probably get more use out...Indeed, while my players probably get more use out of A1 (with all the character templates), A2 has become my standby book for all sorts of games. The need to keep things moving is not restricted to cinematic RPGs, and having a metasystem like this to spit out at least a rough idea of how tough the next fight is can be immensely handy.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7817710432110712270.post-88863933505779317352013-11-11T12:34:18.110-05:002013-11-11T12:34:18.110-05:00Great review on a great book! The advice on running a cinematic game is utterly invaluable and is (in my opinion) a must for any GM running that sort of game.Christopher R. It reads well, and it plays well.

One thing that doesn't work as well in Exploits as it should is the need for a lot of Serendipity to make things happen (Lucky Breaks, etc). Destiny Points from Power Up 5: Impulse Buys help a lot there, and probably more in genre are the rules for Angles (from "I've got an idea", Pyramid 3.53) and Foresight ("Fortunately, I saw this coming", same issue). With the rules in Action and the Angles and Foresight rules, you get a very cinematic experience with a lot of retroactive narrative control. I'd definitely consider Pyramid 3.53 as more essential to the Action line than Furious Fists.Mark Langsdorfhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00301984145275679568noreply@blogger.com
