They make it much easier to track if the zombie that has faerie fire was killed or was that a different one, and the location of 1 square/hex persistent effects like moonbeam or flaming oil.<br /><br />I used to have a GM that used colored miniature poker chips. They stack and fit under the base of medium-sized WotC prepainted minis almost perfectly.
