Drow should be powerful and creepy to me. That is why I remade all drow to be very powerful and deleted the lower level ones. I just assume that since the drow can live forever then they will likely all be accomplished warriors, clerics or wizards. If the drow need numbers I had them recruit ogres, trolls and orcs. I did not want the PCS the be able to slaughter drow. I wanted the drow to be terrifying which can not be achieved if they are 2nd or 3rd level fighters attacking 14th level PCs.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12896361121217230594noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7817710432110712270.post-26250062927533870072014-08-06T22:20:47.336-04:002014-08-06T22:20:47.336-04:00That's why the drow aren't so exciting to ...That's why the drow aren't so exciting to me - yay, a bunch of 3rd-5th level fighters vs. 10th+ level PCs. They can't hit, they just take longer to die.

The hill giants I recall being a cakewalk. The frost giants, less so, because they hit slightly more often . . . and when they did they had the damage to actually matter to the PCs.

If the PCs are all well into the negative ACs in AD&D, though, it won't matter. That 14th level guy from the back of G1-3 would hit any giant on a 1 or better on a d20 twice a round, and gets hit back basically on a 15. Only the high damage of the frost and fire giants make it a fair fight.

This might be why my memories of G1 are "and they killed everything and moved on without too much exploration." Not a real threat. G2, though, is where it starts to get tough.Peter Dhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14246000382321978462noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7817710432110712270.post-77812762808808039542014-08-06T22:15:40.742-04:002014-08-06T22:15:40.742-04:00I played the Giant series modules when I was young...I played the Giant series modules when I was young. I remember them being more or less a massacre because the hill giants could almost never hit the PCS while the fighters hacked away and the magic users launched fireballs and lighting bolts. I felt almost bad for the giants because they could do so little against high powered PCs. I loved how artistic the series was and how it seemed to fit together. Later when I was out of my D&D phase I played Vampire the Masquerade, Ars Magica, Pendragon and Mage the Ascension I tried to recreate the Giant series except that I made the giants into true mythical monsters and gained a lot of supernatural powers like the faerie. The threat level of the giants and their allies, plus their hopeless but stubborn resistance (no morale checks, no surrender, no quarter) makes for a great adventure.

Just make a roster, you won't regret spending the time on that bit of prep.Peter Dhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14246000382321978462noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7817710432110712270.post-6973809695343318652014-08-06T17:14:49.263-04:002014-08-06T17:14:49.263-04:00I've owned these modules for years.
