One thing I really like...I think you're right.

One thing I really like about the GURPS line, both as a writer and a consumer, is the deliberate attention to not trumping BASIC SET (at least for rules). GURPS Martial Arts is full of cool extra stuff you can do, but none of the options make the BASIC SET obsolete. GURPS Powers has more stuff you can do with the stuff in BASIC SET. GURPS Magic expands it. GURPS Action strips it down. And this is very, very deliberate - Sean and I were extremely careful with Martial Arts to make sure it was always a potentially good choice to go with just a straight-up attack, for example.

The GURPS "splatbooks" generally give you more options but aren't designed to make the choices in BASIC SET weaker. You can't say that for every game line. Some deliberately escalate and re-write rules, even, to make sure you need to keep up. But I think people generally expect that the game comes with upkeep costs. I like that GURPS doesn't, unless you want more options. The old ones still work no matter how much stuff you tack on.Peter Dhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14246000382321978462noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7817710432110712270.post-90239429975602421102012-03-02T07:29:31.115-05:002012-03-02T07:29:31.115-05:00A cynical view would suggest that in the case of s...A cynical view would suggest that in the case of splatbooks it may be deliberate: if you don't buy the splatbooks, your new character won't be competitive with your buddies'. (This of course assumes a gaming setup in which people don't share books.)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
