The battle seemed so lo...Oh, yeah. 1 second rounds. The battle seemed so long but really only a minute went by. I was thinking there would be feet of smoke up there. I don't feel you made any bad decisions. After all, rule #1 is Have Fun! I wasn't saying allowing Luck was a bad thing, just pointing out that it made the odds of failing very small when played on top of pretty generous odds of not being eaten completely. I don't believe Luck should be short circuited. Like you said, players buy it for these situations and I really hate it when a GM arbitrarily takes away perks paid for by the characters or earned with years of play.

The Shape Earth coffin strategy is fun. I totally surprised my GM and my whole party when I created a stone chimney so that some giants wouldn't paste my wizard. The second time didn't work as well since the foes were earth elementals and had no trouble taking down the walls. But it did buy me a round of total cover to act. High level/point wizards are fun!

I'm looking forward to catching up on your blog as work and kids allow this summer.Alexhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02295722892051701176noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7817710432110712270.post-84486163775933588562015-07-22T21:14:01.961-04:002015-07-22T21:14:01.961-04:00I agree I was generous. It seemed like it made it ...I agree I was generous. It seemed like it made it more fun, though, and took into account all of the other things going on. The trolls had other issues to deal with - that ghost, possible issues with other inhabitants of the level, etc. They didn't have unlimited time to grab the PCs and do what they wanted, either.

And Luck, well, if you can't use Luck to see if the trolls leave enough of you behind to be Resurrected, it hardly feels like Luck. Allowing it meant no matter what I set the numbers at, the players would feel satisfied that they got every chance they paid for with their points. Not allowing it would mean that some would feel like I'd handwaved away something they paid for intending to use in exactly this kind of situation. Still, even with those numbers, a few people got eaten . . . and who got eaten told us a lot about troll's eating habits. Probably explains why dwarves dislike them so much - not the difficulty of killing with fire in enclosed spaces but also because they're a troll's favorite snack.

All in all, I'd do all of this the same way again. I still wish we didn't need to spend an entire session playing out Vryce's totally hopeless combat, though. It just took freaking forever for the trolls to wear him down, but there was no way he could win. It was just tiresome, like finishing out a game of Monopoly.

As for Dryst - smoke inhalation is a problem that wouldn't have been a big issue for him. There was about a minute or so of fire. Holding his breath, moving along by Hawk Flight, staying high, etc. - seemed like smoke wouldn't be a huge deal. Plus I don't have the ceiling's ups and downs mapped, so I'd essentially be saying the ceilings was configured basically to make sneaking out hard. Besides, Dryst escaping the way he did was just the most expedient of the ways he could have cheated death. He's discussed using Shape Earth to wall himself into a cubby and support himself with Create Air or Purify Air while he regains all of his FP for a real escape.Peter Dhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14246000382321978462noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7817710432110712270.post-74619956317243121852015-07-21T12:46:23.887-04:002015-07-21T12:46:23.887-04:00You were VERY generous! Not only did they have to ...You were VERY generous! Not only did they have to fail multiple survival rolls to really die, but the target numbers were pretty high I think. 25 voracious and vengeful trolls having a 37.5% chance of not eating someone is surprising and not eating them completely at 9.26% is quite generous, then they can use luck.... But the most generous is probably Dryst's escape by flying along the ceiling. You seem to have dismissed the impact of a sizable conflagration in a confined space. Magical and alchemist's fire were blazing over many square yards for a long time. The air near the roof of the cave should have been toxic and filled with thick smoke. I like that he tried to save his own butt first, but as a tough GM I would have pointed out the danger of what he was trying and applied significant fatigue from smoke inhalation which probably would have made trying to escape that way just as risky as charging past the trolls.Alexhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02295722892051701176noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7817710432110712270.post-21920987180392202402015-03-13T20:54:17.708-04:002015-03-13T20:54:17.708-04:00It wouldn't be a bad approach. The DFM1 trolls, at least, are pretty smart, and if they act that way, they should be dangerous and hard to kill. And it felt fairer than just declaring all of the dead totally eaten and gone.

As for "Vryce, Dryst, and all the rest" - yes, actually, I am. Vryce is nearly 2x the points of a starting character, and Dryst is almost 150 more than a starting character. So it's a little difficult to justify making up a character that isn't, basically, designed to buff Vryce and support Dryst's spells. I've posed some options to the players about playing a bunch of new guys for a while until people have characters more even with Dryst and Vryce, but I've only heard back from one player so far.
