"What...An edit and a couple of counterpoints:

"What is it about the map that they except" *expect

First, Beedo specifically mentioned wanting to map the world as preparation for armies converging on the megadungeon. I'm guessing that you went with more general thoughts here instead of a strictly limited response to his post, and for that matter, the same function could be served by a list of names and travel times: Alandia is five days' march away for an army; The Kingdom of B is ten days away, etc. It really comes down to what the individual DM works best with. Maybe this fits under your "rough sketch" idea.

The other - and I'm pretty sure you'll agree with this, and simply didn't treat - is the possibility that mapping out a world can be something a DM wants to do for their own sake, rather than imagined necessity or for their demanding players. There's the fun of world-building for its own sake, and beyond that there are little bits of surprise or inspiration that can come from the exercise. If the army from the Kingdom of B has to pass through Alandia to converge on the megadungeon, how do they gain passage? Maybe looking at the map inspires you to have them arrive together after forging an alliance, or maybe they arrive as especially hostile to each other after skirmishing the whole way. Unless you start making up random tables (adding to the workload), it's hard to get the same results from a simple chart. It all comes down to how much time you have and how much the mapping is for your own purposes rather than due to perceived demands of the game.Confanityhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10361443460498670841noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7817710432110712270.post-59200429711875469032015-12-30T09:38:13.372-05:002015-12-30T09:38:13.372-05:00I saw it and commented over on my G+ feed.
