Master of Magic for $2.99

So, GOG is having a sale.

Two thing worth noting:

- Mount & Blade, free. This is my first time with this game - it's amusing enough, and free.

- Master of Magic is 50% off. $2.99 for MOM is pretty excellent. Fun game. Who wouldn't want to be an immortal wizard-rule competing with other wizards across two planes to cast the Spell of Mastery and achieve utter victory over reality?

There are other things for sale, but my rule is one purchase at a time. I know MOM will occupy my attention for a while. It's a nice little game to have for when I have minutes, or maybe hours, to spend on some relaxing.

  1. I bought MoM on GoG ages ago, and it is a good Civ spinoff. I recommend you look at the unofficial 1.4 patch, which fixes various problems, and makes the AI a bit more competent (it's a little 'one-note' in tactical combat at the moment). I also ended up writing up some of my adventures with it (started on a 'what have you been playing lately' list).

I recommend you look at Age of Wonders 2 someday as the closest thing to a sequel MoM has ever had.

    1. I'll check out that patch. I played the heck out of MOM a long time ago, but I just never did get around to installing a copy and getting it to run under DOX BOX. It's just easier to pay GOG $3 and have them set it up for me.

AOW2 I played, too, but it never grabbed me like MOM did. It just didn't hold my interest very long.

    2. So I'm trying the patch . . . and it seems like tactical combat is gone. Anything I engage with just automatically resolved the fight. Usually with, "You have been defeated." I can't seem to get tactical combat working . . . is that a bug, or a "feature," of the unofficial patch?

    3. Nevermind, I found the "automatic combat" setting. Who'd want that, nevermind it's the default?

      Bah! Bah!

    4. Odd, I don't even remember an option for automatic combat. It certainly never did that to me.

My current copy is also from GoG with its DOSBox install, but I do also have my own DOSBox w/front end to run some old games that have been moving from hard drive to hard drive since the floppy days.

  2. Try AoW3 -- it's very good as well and available from GOG. Love MOM, though.

    1. How is it compared to AOW2? I played AOW2, and it was okay, but like I said above, it didn't really grab me.

Either way it will have to wait - my policy is one game at a time. I save a lot of money that way.

  3. Terraria. 50% off; would still be a bargain at double the original price. If you don't have time now, it can wait - a (free) update is in the works and will likely be out around Thanksgiving or winter break.

What is Terraria? - you may ask. It's... like 2D Metroidvania Minecraft, but with more and better crafting, more and better combat, challenging bosses, rich and surprising worlds to explore full of varied and beautifully realized "biomes," and continued support with massive free updates.
