Friday Night Fun - 3/7/2025

The usual fun for Friday!

- I stumbled on this video on YouTube of a military vet on the Warlord demo team showing off a setup for Bolt Action. Looks beautiful.

- I purchased Skald: Against the Black Priory. It was on sale for like $9 all in, so I got it. I figured if I disliked it, I'd return it. The videos of gameplay I saw seemed okay. It's actually a lot more fun than it looks, although it can be hard to read the text. Worth the money for a deeper game than Diablo 1, but not so deep that I can't just learn to play as I play.

- Game is Sunday. I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out. I hope it's the last session in this delve, but that's partly up to the players and partly up to the dungeon's environment. DF Felltower isn't a "fast forward" kind of game, so the more time spent in combat, the less time to explore - and neither gets handwaved. I think we'll have time, despite that. Fingers crossed!

Friday Links 1/24/2025

Friday has come.

- I finally got around to getting & reading Lyorn (Amazon.com link), by Steven Brust. He dedicated it to John M. "Mike" Ford, with regrets that Mike wouldn't be able to see it.

It involves a musical, with based-on-real-world-music songs in the text.

I mostly bring this up because, yeah, John M. Ford would have loved it.

I interacted with him on the Pyramid message boards back in the day, as I mentioned here. Knowing his taste, as soon as I saw the first music, I thought, oh, yeah, he would have loved this book. I'm not a musical guy, but I can read along and grin and bear it because of the dedication.

- I think our next game is Sunday. I hope so, because I'm planning on it.

- Yexil from Gamma World mini. I had no idea they made that. We met one of them, once.

Friday Roundup - 1/10/2025

Friday roundup!

- A pretty cool paint job on this Reaper Miniatures shoggoth

- Over on Don't Forget Your Boots, I read Out With The Old, In With The Gnu

Too-different character concepts is a tough problem to overcome. I've gone as far as making meta-game pronouncements to ensure everyone has some reason to be together to avoid that problem. Even then, you get the guy who wants to run a fanatical holy warrior and the guy who wants to run an undead-making necromancer and yet still play together.*

The other issue he mentions is skill-boosting. High skills are part of the fun of my game, too, but once they hit a certain point nothing can usefully compete. This is why I'm very reluctant to hand out items that boost skill. I'd hand out a +3 Puissance sword or a +5 Strength belt before I'd pass out a +1 Dexterity ring. I'd rather hand out wishes than skill boosters or non-ST stat boosters.

- Next DF Felltower game is Friday.

- Speaking of megadungeons, Elfmaids & Octopi has a look at the big published ones. It's in eyebleeding white-on-black with red, though.

* They're fighting crime the hard way, wearing magic armor, with a +3 Puissance Holy Avenger and the Black Cauldron.

Images from Session 202

Here are the two enemies the PCs are facing in the Brotherhood Complex.

Mechanical Knight of Cornwood - a somewhat unreliable but formidable construct. Cheaper to make than most golems for this level of ability, but their speedy contruction has a cost in reliability.

These are straight-up statting up of a favorite mini of mine - a Tom Meier-scultped Ral Partha Mechanical Knight. I have a mounted one, as well, so beware, PCs!

Iron Witch of Cornwood - the inventor of the Mechanical Knight, one of the fractious Cornwoodian nobles who chafe at the iron-handed rule of King Titanius Anglesmith.

The Iron Witch is actually a mini painted by my sister. I had an enamel paint set from some model set, and she proceeded to use those to paint one of my TSR minis from set 5303 Magic Users and Illusionists. But we didn't have anything resembling flesh color - it was a set of vehicle colors. So she just didn't paint that. I kept the mini as-is, spray-sealed it, and put an "Iron Witch" in my GURPS campaign when I started to use minis again. She was a distant figure in that game - and was possibly responsible for giving the rapier Malice (see DFT3) to a swashbuckler type PC. I made her a bad guy in the Felltower world because she was an ideal match for the Ral Partha mini.

I loved the idea of an iron golem wizard, especially one that either a) was human, and made herself into an iron golem, or b) was always a golem. In the previous game, it was option a. In this one, it's likely that she's just a willful golem who has improved herself into a master wizard. A true self-made woman!

And why do we call them robots, and pronounce it robut? Here is Chop demonstrating his expertise in First Aid (Human) vs. Hidden Lore (Construct) . . .

Random Thoughts & Links for 8/30/2024

It's the end of another week.

- Delta has some Star Frontiers minis he's made from molds. You know how much I love Sathar!

- This is an interesting take on treasure - per hoard, not per gp.

- Marc Miller has plans for Traveller to continue after he dies.

- My playthrough of Persian Gulf continues. Things have gone bad for the US and its allies, despite the Soviet's inability to roll well on the Combat Results Table. There are just too many of them, and some poor choices cost the US some time and space. Turkey is overrun and its last units are getting mauled. Iraq looks to be next. Jordan's force in Iran was expelled from the city they held, and now can't break back through to the mountains. The Kurds are largely eliminated, and the rebellious Iranian army units - that sides with the US - are all destroyed. The US holds the swamps and oil fields around As-Basra and Iraq, and that's about it. Poor rolls on maintenance have meant the US can't keep the B-52s rolling week after week, and through sheer numbers the Soviets are contesting the air a bit now. I'll play it out, but it's looking bad . . . the US has almost nothing else coming (a few reservists in Iraq, that's all) and the Soviets have another 10 divisions coming and some units a week or two later. They're all poor quality units (Mig-19s, for goodness sake, and 3rd-rate reservists) but there are a lot of them. The US needs nuclear escalation to the next level for air-delivered tactical nukes, but unless that comes soon it won't change anything.

Still fun, but man, I forgot how hard it is to stem a wildly aggressive Soviet player with so few units. If you don't get deep into Iran fast enough to sieze the mountain passes, you're toast.

Random Thoughts & Links for 5/31/2024

- Want the Battle of Five Armies in 15mm?

The price keeps dropping. From $7995 in 2/23 to $5995 now.

Where is the floor for that thing? It started at almost $13K.

- This Death Race game makes me want to play Car Wars. Not enough to deal with my loophole-loving friends, though.

- Permanent monster paralysis in D&D?

- I made a ruling for my DF game by email, which I'll post about tomorrow.

Painting glasses?

I'm thinking of getting back into painting minis. I stopped a while back - maybe a couple years ago, maybe longer - whenever my last WIP post was, in all likelihood. I stopped for a few reasons, but a big one is vision. I wear glasses for vision correction, but painted without them. Now, though, my close-in vision is sufficiently poor that holding a 28mm mini in close is still not enough to see details and is very tiring on my eyes, as well.

I cannot paint with an external magnifying glass. I have a rig for such, but I just can't handle the different levels of magification between my hand, the brush, the glass, and what's magnified in the glass. I tried and failed.

So I'm thinking I need something like this:

Painting like Joubert

Or a pair of magnifying glasses I can wear. I don't know if it's possible for me to paint even with such a setup, but I'm going to try.

Does anyone have a recommendation from experience? I've done some random searching, but actual use experience would be helpful so I'm not just guessing and spending.

Minis I Don't Need But Want - Evil Geniuses

I stumbled on these on Mark Copplestone's webpage.

I have no need for these guys, but I want to play a game where I need them.

That guy on the left looks like a non-green Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz or a Sontaran's skinny cousin. I can't place him, except as a vaguely Kruschevian type.

Then we have robot Hitler.

And a metal-handed Mao.

Again, I have no need . . . but man, they'd be the best James Bond RPG villians you could hope for if you went for non-canonical bad guys.

EOE Orbis Shadow Elves & Ver'men

I thought this was neat:

EOE Orbis Return of the Forgotten

I don't use the Ver'men, but I do feature ratmen in my games. I do use some Shadow Elves. The Shadow Elf Killers from this line of figures are the ones I use for the six-fingered Felltower dwellers the PCs have called "Gith."

New monsters I need to stat

These minis are pretty horrifying, and really would make good encounters in a demi-plane off of Felltower.

Or just in Felltower.

Crab Link

and this one

Gross! I love them.

Now, to stat them up!

Friday Random Links & Notes 2/17/2023

The usual random bits.

- James Mal's Top 10 non-D&D games. GURPS isn't one of them, but he's written a GURPS Traveller book and Traveller is #1, so maybe that explains that.

Part I
Part II

I like a lot of those on that list. I especially agree on Gangbusters!, which is really only hampered by being class-and-level. It's really hard to deal with having to give reporters levels and such things. It would have been better entirely skill focused but in general TSR didn't do without classes and levels back in those days.

- Doug asked me a question about my Q&D grappling rules that provoked a "huh, I hadn't thought of that." Now I have to think of that. And figure out what to do or not do about that. Damn questions!

- Orc minis! I like my orcs green, but I like these orcs.

- I always liked the catoblepas. I used one, once, to great amusement. So I like this tactics article for them.

- In Pathfinder notes, I'm still Team Evil, specifically and aggressively Lawful Evil. So imagine my surprise when being Lawful and Evil caused me to have a conflict with a LE potential ally, who rejected me as weak and unfit as a ruler. This is the Lixia / Hellknights quest line, for people who've played. Very annoying. I went out of my way to try to nuture this alliance but apparantly if you choose anything but the exact right answer at the right time for the right conversations, you are just 1 calorie, not evil enough. Aggravating.

I killed them off for this, of course. What did they think, annoying the evil Queen Molly? I kill people just for the XP, even when they don't annoy me. I'm to blame for my actions but seriously, they could have thought this through.

Terrain, Tokens, and Decorations for Foundry VTT?

I'm busily creating my dungeon features for Felltower in Foundry. I'm having the usual issues - perfect minis for a token but I can't find the mini in my collection, tools that aren't always the friendliest in the world, a Run Time "5" error on GCA sometimes killing my NPC imports, and so on.

My current wonder is, how do I do terrain features and the like for Foundry? I've found lots of maps with details on them, but I really need a set of things like trap doors, couches, bookcases, boxes, urns, etc. like I had (somewhat) in Roll20.

Even being able to roughly draw them would be fine, except that drawings are all-or-nothing. It's very easy to wipe them out with a single wrong click and it's hard for me to draw well with a pencil nevermind a mouse or trackball.

There must be a "terrain pack" of some kind. And something with weapons so we can place dropped weapons down would be sweet. I'm beginning to think I need to take a lot of pictures and make tokens for each and every one. That sounds . . . very labor intensive.

So if you know of a good pack, or a good solution, I'm open to suggestions!

Friday links for 11/18/2022

- A fire-breathing bulette . . so . . . a non-flying Gamera, then?

- Thanks to Tenkar for posting this.

$100 is a lot for 8 minis. The beholder is beautiful, but it's also around $13 even if you think the others are worth the same.

- The post yesterday about offense vs. defense was specifically occasioned by me listening to a bunch of Hawkwind recently, including Warrior on the Edge of Time (listen here) (Lemmy's last album with them.) It got me thinking about Elric, and the Chaos Shield, and why I'd rather give someone Stormbringer than the Chaos Shield. So, now you know.

- These guys are interesting.

Grognard's Grimoire: Gorodaka (Haughty Dead)

- Wargames Foundry has launched their Christmas sale for their main site and Casting Room Minis, too. Too bad I already have dozens of pirates!

- (Editing Later) Forgot one - collected information on the Egg of Coot. it has that weird technological/magical mix that characterizes a lot of Blackmoor and makes it feel more like Hawkmoon than generic fantasy.
