How is the latest Star Wars RPG?

So it seems like we might play some Star Wars, using the latest version of the RPG.

We've got a good GM lined up, who ran some Star Wars for us back in 2005 (just before and until slightly after I moved overseas.) It was a fun game, and based on 3.x D&D.

(That's the game I'm assuming we're going to play, since it's the only new one out there I can find that's also an RPG)

I don't have any experience with the new system, though. For those of you who've played it, how is it?

  1. If this is the same system as Edge of Empire, I'm afraid I can't really recommend it. I played with a group that used it for a while, and it was serviceable enough. But as a grad student I wasn't really able to devote a lot of time to really learning the new system, and the novelty-dice-based rolling was always kind of a turn-off. If there's a system that you know and used before and it was okay, maybe save yourself the time and money and use the old one again.

(For that matter, Justin Alexander really takes the system apart here. Your mileage may vary, of course, but I can't disagree with anything he says from my own, admittedly limited, experience.)

  2. I picked it up on the cheap from a group on Facebook. I have only played it once. We had fun, but I don't know the system at all. I am turned off by having to buy custom dice.

    1. I heard WEG Star Wars was good, but I have no experience in it.

Nor am I going to tell our GM to guy buy an OOP game off eBay in case we do actually get to play. :D

  5. I've enjoyed playing it, but that's just been a few times at conventions; no ongoing games.

  6. It's FFG Star Wars. If you liked the previous title, this one will also fill you with joy. If you hated the previous title... ditto.

I currently both love and hate FFG's Star Wars, so ... yeah, that's why my answer is a bit ambivalent.
