DFRPG - Arrived!

My DFRPG box arrived today. Let's see how it looks:

Opening the box was interesting - this is probably the first GURPS item I've pulled out of shrink wrap since the 1st edition boxed set.

- the box needs a side-spacer. Okay, fine, but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to cram into the side once it breaks or I ditch it. My dice bag?

- it's very attractive. I already feel bad about the amount of damage mine is going to suffer from general use.

- I'm not excited by special dice with pips replaced by images. These dice are nice, but fit exactly that description. I hope my players don't use them.

- it's very flattering to have my name in a boxed set in any fashion as a contributor.

- it's more so to have monsters I made up for my own games and specifically for DF in the monsters book, and as cardboard heroes - Rock Mites, I'm looking at you!

- the maps are nice.

- I love the back covers being useful charts, not just a back blurb or art.

I haven't taken any shots of the GM screen yet, but it's also nice. I wish it had charts on the player side, too, and chose to put the damage modifiers for locations up. My players and I use that constantly.

  1. I ditched all the cardboard ASAP (so I can fit the GM screen in the box). I really like the pregens--they did a nice job with the quirks and backstories.

    1. They're good characters, and interesting. Sean has a way of doing that. One of his example wizards started our group on short staves and shields, another on using Wild Talent to access the whole spell list . . . I wouldn't be surprised if this batch didn't do that, too.

Maybe we should combine screens - one facing me, one facing out to you guys. Or I can copy the backs of the books and put them facing out for you guys to reference - area effect, reach, Size and Speed/Range Table, etc.

  2. I'm jelly. It appears mine was delivered to the wrong address... and now I must fight the USPS to get them to rectify this.

    1. When I got home mine was no where to be found - luckily, it had been brought into the house. I've dealt with the USPS delivering to the wrong address. I'd get right on them and hit up SJG, too, if the post office doesn't get you your game by Monday.

    2. Already 'yelled' at the USPS (politely, no actual yelling). I'll wait till USPS is done investigating before going to SJG. If the box is at a neighbors house (it's still kinda crazy down here post-hurricane) or somehow at the post office (despite tracking showing it as delivered) and it's all cool, then no need to get anyone at SJG working on it.

    3. Crisis averted. It ended up in the good neighbors mail and they brought it over to me.

      Much rejoicing by all.

    4. Ah, that's great. I'm glad it arrived safely where it belongs.

    5. heh. PO played ding dong ditch and then never attempted delivery. I was an hour at them, all while having to prove to Feducks that I was a person so they would let me speak to one to get the postal tracking number...

  3. * The box and the cardboard heroes are tough buggers. I didn't realize just how thick everything would be. I just ran my finger over my Munchkin Quest box right now, and it's a few mm thinner than the DFRPG box. The screen is like a damn shield. Ever suffered through Teaching Mrs. Tingle? I think of the one girl stopping the crossbow bolt with her book when I handle this screen.
    * I'm disappointed in the fact that the cardboard heroes monsters are only geared towards the two adventures in the set rather than having a variety of them for our own adventures. No orcs, no dragons. Oh well.

    1. DFRPG expansion with more Cardboard heroes incoming?

The "now that DFRPG is done SJ Games should do boxed set X" meme makes no sense to me.

If DFRPG works its proof that people want DF. So give them more. Kickstarter provides a place where cardboard heroes and even minis! Can be funded and make this a real possibility.

DFRPG Monsters with everything included would be neat.

    2. Stuff would have to sell first. A quick monster supplement covering DFM3, Pyramid, some scattered supplements, and the stuff some of us have ready to go in a pinch (I have about 30 at the moment) would be a good expansion.

    3. Agreed on both. Set of printed cardboard heroes of all of the extras would be cool, but it would need to follow successfully selling products.

I kind of hope they don't cannibalize DFM3 yet. I was really hoping the DFRPG would increase sales of it further, not kneecap them.

    4. Another option is just licensing the art/concept.

I await my Flat Plastic Miniatures this December which include licensed game company art.

  4. I need to sit down with the Spells book and a beverage to see how to create an evil cleric. I really want to stay just within the box set for starters.

    1. Hmm. I'll have to take a look and see. My players generally ask to be "evil clerics" but mean "like good clerics, complete with healing, but also with attack spells and special evil powers." That's probably how they'd look.

    2. Please mention what you discover. I'm comparing the "Evil Cleric" spell list in DF3 with "Spells" and am finding that I will need to do some fudging. Most likely just straight reversals, e.g. "Purify Water" to "Foul Water", that sort of thing. Nothing that can't be handled.

    3. I've gone over it. The easiest solution I've got is just take the Evil list from DF 3 and use it. It gets more PI 4, 5, and 6 level spells, but it'll be missing some stuff like "Sense Good" (reversal from Sense Evil).

Yeah, you'll need to add some spells (Foul Water specifically comes to mind), but it's not egregious.

And it's an /Evil/ Cleric, of course he breaks the rules!

  5. I am definitely continuing with allies, necromancy and a great many excerpted spells, like spell throwing.
